SUMAC constructed this private Art Studio in the Woods near Plano, Illinois. The design takes its inspiration from local corn cribs, which surround the site. The building footprint was inserted into a dense collection of trees that overlooked a pond on the site. To preserve the drip lines of the surrounding trees, SUMAC placed four small piers at each of the corners and linked them together with concrete beams that float a half inch above the soil. This has allowed the trees that are within a few feet of the project to continue to thrive and provide shade to the rooftop observatory.
